Pregnant woman murdered and her eight-month-old foetus cut from her womb

A pregnant woman has been found murdered with her eight-month-old foetus ripped from her womb.

Darlene Hayes' heavily decomposed body was discovered wrapped in a blanket and concealed in a cupboard of her flat.

Now police in the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, have launched a hunt for the female foetus, which could have survived the ordeal.

Sergeant Kerry Hazelhurst told the Boston Herald newspaper that officers were hunting for the foetus - whether alive or dead - by going to hospitals and urging the public to come forward if they are suspicious of anyone who appeared with a baby within the last few days.

'We were told the foetus is viable,' he said, adding that if alive the baby would need immediate medical care to survive.
